Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner and entertainment icon Jerry Seinfeld was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in Massapequa, Long Island. He graduated from Queens College in 1976 and went straight to the New York comedy club circuit to hone his skills. It wasn’t until 1981 when he was 27 that his career took off – the result of his first successful spot on “The Tonight Show” with then-host Johnny Carson. Appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman” and “The Merv Griffin Show” followed, and Seinfeld soon became one of the leading standup comedians in the business.
In 1989, Seinfeld teamed up with fellow standup comedian Larry David and created “Seinfeld Chronicles” for Castle Rock Entertainment. This became the template for one of the most successful series in the history of television in NBC’s “Seinfeld.” The show ran for nine extraordinarily successful seasons and garnered numerous accolades, including the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 1993 and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 1995, 1997 and 1998. In 1998, the finale episode aired to a national audience of a staggering 75 million viewers. Currently in its seventh year in syndication, “Seinfeld” is still a front-runner in the ratings. As a testament to its success in the television landscape, TV Guide’s poll of the “Greatest Shows of All Time” listed “Seinfeld” as #1.
After retiring from his hit series, Seinfeld immediately returned to what he loved most — performing standup comedy. He showcased his talents during a sold-out, week-long engagement at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York City and the last show was telecast live in August 1998 as an HBO special, “I’m Telling You for the Last Time.” In 2001, Seinfeld began creating a new act that was chronicled in the documentary “Comedian” which gave a behind-the-scenes look at the world of standup. In 2003, Seinfeld penned the best-selling children’s book “Halloween,” which has become a household perennial for both kids and adults alike.
On the big screen, Seinfeld starred, wrote and produced the DreamWorks animated box office hit “Bee Movie,” which premiered in November 2007. He most recently appeared with the cast of “Seinfeld” in the seventh season of the HBO series “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Seinfeld can now be seen performing standup across the country on an ongoing basis, offering his fans a constant flow of new material. His most recent television project, “The Marriage Ref,’ in which he serves as executive producer, premiered earlier this year, and has been renewed for a second season. And he is currently directing and producing the off-Broadway production of Colin Quinn’s “Long Story Short.”
Seinfeld currently resides in New York with his wife and three children.
